i have this best friend.
we met at the age of four. the thing that makes my jaw to drop is the re-connection. from age four to about fourteen, we were tight. then the friendship sort of fell off the grid. i moved to North Carolina, she stayed in Florida, and the demands of high school and later, college, got in the way. then in our early-ish 20's, bam. we re-connected.
she and i have been holding weekly, hour-long phone convos ever since. Gabi's my spiritual warrior; my wine drinking, high heel wearing, chick flick loving soul sister; the friend who makes me smile just by excitedly exclaiming "vikTORija!" multiple times during a call (it's the Cuban-Italian in her ;).
i call her the-friend-in-my-pocket. when hubby and i moved from Asheville to Durham, i faced the challenge of finding new jobs + making new friends. but i didn't have to worry about Gabi. our weekly phone conversations continued and i, at least, had a friend who made the move with me.
my birthday fell on a saturday this year (one of the best days of the week to have a birthday!). it also fell during hubby's 4-day weekend (he gets one every month). a trip to Florida was planned, where we spent three absolutely smashing days with Gabi, her husband Jonathan, and their kiddos Matthew, Daniel, + Natalie. a siesta happened every afternoon (can there possibly be an adult ANYWHERE who doesn't think a 2- or 3-hr. quiet time is an excellent idea?! we adults crashed on the couch, caught up on some reading, i.e. relaxed right along with the napping kiddos); drinks and board games were on the agenda for the evenings; the beach was visited; our other south Florida friends came together for dinner downtown. In other words, it was a great birthday weekend. i might put 29 on repeat.
